A cliffside collapse completely buried a 25-year-old construction worker in Utah, fire officials said and news outlets reported.

The worker was at a construction site in Summit Park when his foot became trapped in a rebar as he tried to flee the collapsing cliff on Monday, Aug. 8, according to Park City Fire District officials.

Other construction workers began digging the man out so he could breathe, officials said.

When a fire crew got to the scene, he had been partially dug out. Firefighters then continued to dig the man out of the debris with their hands, officials said.

“You don’t know how much the dirt is compacted, it’s like an avalanche as well,” Park City Fire District Battalion Chief Sean Briley told KSL-TV. “He may have anywhere from six minutes to up to 15, 20 minutes, so time is of the essence.”

He was freed and then taken to a hospital where he was reported as being in stable condition, officials said.

Summit Park is about 20 miles east of Salt Lake City.
