A 78-year-old woman died after she was stabbed by a man while looking for recyclables in an alleyway in California, officials said.

Investigators believe Paz Veliz was attacked from behind in an alley in the 2900 block of Coolidge Street on Saturday, July 16, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department. When neighbors began yelling for help, the man fled on foot.

When officers arrived, they found Veliz with stab wounds to her upper torso, police said. The Long Beach Fire Department pronounced her dead.

A neighbor told officers that he saw a man running, and police found him “running towards the 91 Freeway near Paramount Boulevard.”

After the man would not heed commands, officers used force to bring him into custody, according to police. Police said they found a knife while arresting him.

Police are unsure of the motive for the stabbing and are investigating the pair’s relationship, police said. They lived in the same condo complex.

Kevin Ngo, 31, was arrested on a murder charge, police said. He was being held on $2 million bail.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 562-570-7244.
