Lightning strike sparks house fire, engulfing it in flames, North Carolina video shows

A Winston-Salem home caught fire after being struck by a lightning, videos from the Winston-Salem Fire Department show.

The department tweeted a series of videos Tuesday, June 5, showing firefighters battling smoke and flames billowing from the roof of a home in the 1300 block of Pheasant Lane. Officials confirmed that the fire was caused by a lightning strike.

The home was not vacant at the start of the fire, but there were no injuries, the department told McClatchy News.

The fire came after the region suffered a severe storm. WXII 12 News meteorologist Michelle Kennedy reported strong wind gusts, “torrential” downpour, lightning, and flash flood warnings in several North Carolina counties, including Alamance, Guilford, Randolph and Forsyth.

Firefighters responded to a second residential fire in the area later Tuesday evening, shortly after 8 p.m. The fire occurred in the 4900 block of Keehlen Avenue in an empty residence and was not caused by lightning, according to the Winston-Salem Journal. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Severe weather is expected to continue in the area through Wednesday. The National Weather Service issued an advisory early Wednesday morning warning of extreme heat, damaging winds and flash flooding.
