Former lithium mine once owned by Thomas Edison lists in South Dakota. Take a look
A “piece of history” is on the real estate market in Keystone, South Dakota, for $405,000.
The 8.9 acres was once owned by Thomas Edison, the American inventor known for introducing the modern age of electricity, is now up for grabs.
And it’s only about 3 miles from the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
“Purchasing this land would make you ONLY the third owner of record behind THOMAS EDISON!” the listing on Zillow.com says. “What was once a lithium mine has now become your own private swimming hole, featuring crystal clear spring water.”
According to LithiumCongress.com, lithium “is a highly reactive alkali metal with excellent heat and electrical conductivity.”
The global market for lithium has skyrocketed thanks to more people buying electric cars, which run on lithium batteries.
The mine was considered to be small when it was running, and has no plans to reopen, theDiggings.com said.
While a structure that looks like a barn of sorts is visible in one of the photos, the listing says that no value has been assigned to it – it’s basically just being sold for the land value.
Edison was known for his many inventions, most notably the phonograph and the motion picture camera. In his lifetime, Edison patented 1,093 inventions, The New Yorker said. The inventor is often credited with inventing the light bulb, when he just perfected it.
Keystone is about 21 miles southwest of Rapid City.
