Earthquake swarm off the Oregon coast includes 5.6-magnitude quake, geologists say

An earthquake swarm is shaking off the Oregon coast, geologists said.

At least eight earthquakes have struck off the Oregon coast in about seven hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest was a 5.6-magnitude earthquake shortly before 5 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15. Multiple people reported feeling the earthquake even though it was off the coast.

The other earthquakes in the swarm ranged from a 3.8-magnitude earthquake to a 4.3-magnitude one.

There are no tsunami warnings or advisories, according to the National Weather Service.

Magnitude measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake, the U.S. Geological Survey says. It replaces the old Richter scale.

Quakes between 2.5 and 5.4 magnitude are often felt but rarely cause much damage, according to Michigan Tech. Quakes below 2.5 magnitude are seldom felt by most people.
