20-year-old woman drowns in Missouri River after her boat sinks, Iowa officials say

The body of a 20-year-old woman was pulled out of the Missouri River on Thursday, June 2, four days after a Memorial Day weekend boating accident, Iowa officials say.

The woman was identified by Harrison County Emergency Management officials as Emma Sue Olsen, from Omaha, Nebraska. Her body was found around 8:30 a.m.

Olsen was on the boat with “several other people” when it sank around midnight on Sunday, May 29, according to Siouxland News. Other boaters helped rescue the other people on the vessel.

Authorities believe alcohol was a factor in the boat sinking, KETV reported. Olsen was sleeping in the cabin of the boat at the time of the incident, the Omaha World-Herald reported.

The boat was pulled out of the river Tuesday, according to KETV, but Olsen was not found until two days later.

“We’re just glad to be able to give her family some comfort, some closure,” Harrison County Sheriff Brandon Doiel told the Omaha World-Herald.

Harrison County EMA officials said they are continuing to investigate the boating accident.
