A 16-year-old Montclair girl is expected to recover after she was stabbed in the head by a classmate as she walked home from school, California police reported.

The boy stabbed the girl from behind about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, on her way home from high school, the Montclair Police Department said in a news release.

When the girl turned around, he continued stabbing her with a fixed-blade knife, police said.

Onlookers intervened and detained the boy, the release said. He faces a charge of attempted murder. The girl was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police, who are continuing to investigate the incident, did not provide a motive for the attack.

Montclair is a city of more than 42,000 people east of downtown Los Angeles.
