Curious bear wants into home — and uses its teeth to open door, NY video shows

A curious bear approached a home and figured out it could open a door — using its teeth, video shows.

The bear is seen striding up to the home and checking out its storm door in the footage shared by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation on April 26. The video is of a home in Pond Eddy from 2021.

It taps the door handle a few times with its right paw before grabbing onto it with its mouth, pulling it open, the video shows. However, the bear is met with another closed door behind the storm door.

After a few sniffs and some apparent pondering, the bear seems to realize he can’t get past the second door and walks away from the home before giving one last glance at it, according to the footage.

Wildlife officials shared the video on Facebook with a classic line from the “Jurassic Park” movie: “yes, unless they figure out how to open doors.”

Additionally, officials reminded the public “to limit food sources such as bird feeders, pet food, and open trash containers to reduce bear conflicts with humans.”

While the agency didn’t say what type of bear was seen in the video, it appears to be a black bear.

“Bears are more likely to seek out human food sources in the spring and the summer,” it says online. “During these times, natural food sources may be scarce, particularly during periods of drought.”

Pond Eddy is roughly 135 miles southwest of Albany.
