Construction workers plummet 20 feet to the ground as scaffold collapses, SC cops say

Three workers plummeted about 20 feet after a piece of scaffolding collapsed underneath them on a South Carolina highway, Marion Police Chief Bobby Crawford told McClatchy News.

Crawford responded to the scene on Highway 76 at around 2 pm on Thursday, March 30, to find the injured workers being loaded onto stretchers.

Crawford said he did not know the severity of the workers’ injuries.

The workers were building a wall beside the highway when a large gust of wind blew the scaffolding off the structure, he said. They landed in some debris that was piled to the side of the site.

Crawford said the police will not open an investigation into the incident.

“You can clearly see it was an accident,” he said.
