Jellyfish are taking over a Hawaii shoreline and stinging beachgoers, officials told news outlets.

Oahu’s Hanauma Bay closed Saturday, March 26, after a “high volume influx of jellyfish” took over the beach, KHON 2 reported.

Honolulu city and county officials posted warning signs at beaches because of the jellyfish, according to the Star Advertiser. The city sent an emergency alert before 9:45 a.m. to shut down the beach, the news outlet reported.

People are encouraged to swim at beaches with lifeguards, according to Hawaii News Now. Hanauma Bay will reopen after it’s determined safe for swimmers.

The beach closed after multiple beachgoers were stung by jellyfish, according to KHON. Officials did not know how many people were stung, Hawaii News Now reported.
