A criminal justice student was up late when she tried her luck on a Virginia lottery ticket — and won big time.

Now, she can pay off bills after scoring a $226,351 jackpot prize, the Virginia Lottery said March 18 in a news release.

Alexis Borrero is celebrating the windfall after she spent a late night on the internet. She came across the VIP Ultra online game and said it drew her in.

“I saw how big the jackpot was, and I had a feeling,” Borrero, a Chesapeake resident, told officials.

Her senses were spot-on because her ticket beat the odds to win the six-figure prize.

“It was an amazing feeling,” Borrero told the Virginia Lottery. “It’s a feeling I’ve never had before.”

Borrero, a full-time student and a bartender, plans to invest some of her prize money and spend the rest on bills. Officials in their news release didn’t say how much of the extra cash she kept after taxes.

It’s not the first time a student’s decision to play the lottery has paid off.

In November 2020, North Carolina officials said a college student won big after stopping at a grocery store.

Months earlier, a woman studying to become a nurse bought a lucky ticket on her North Carolina coffee run, McClatchy News reported.
