A candidate for Texas Railroad Commissioner was killed in a collision between his SUV and a tractor trailer while heading to a campaign event in Midland.

Marvin Summers was in his Cadillac Escalade when it crashed into a cargo tank hauled by a big rig on State Highway 349, according to a statement from the Midland Police Department. The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8.

Summers, 69 and from Lubbock, had several campaign events planned in Midland, according to posts on his Facebook page.

Police said the tractor trailer was on the outside lane when it attempted to make a right turn onto a private drive.

Summers did not slow down and rear-ended it, killing him, police said.

Summers, a Republican, is one of five Republican candidates on the ballot for the March 1 primary. Early voting begins Monday, Feb. 14.
