Construction worker cashing check buys Maryland lotto ticket. It pays off ― big time
A 33-year-old Maryland construction worker got more than he bargained for on payday.
That’s because Jemmelle Murphy’s stop at a liquor store to cash his check ended with a $100,000 lottery win, according to the Maryland Lottery.
“I celebrated with the clerk a bit and then rushed home to show my family,” Murphy said in a news release. “Everyone was grinning from ear to ear.”
He bought a $100,000 Lucky instant ticket for $30 at Waldorf Liquors on Crain Highway in Waldorf, according to lottery officials.
Murphy scratched the ticket in the store ― revealing “his winning numbers first” before making his way down and seeing a matching number with a $100,000 top prize, the lottery service said.
Murphy, who lives in Prince George’s County, “has worked in commercial construction and residential building for a family-owned business for nearly 15 years,” he told lottery officials.
He hopes the big win will help kick-start a deck-building business.
“I’m just blessed,” Murphy said in the release. “I’ve stayed focused and do good and good things have happened.”
The seller of the ticket received a $1,000 commission, lottery officials said.
The $100,000 Lucky scratch-off game started in September and is made up of prizes ranging from $30 to $100,000, according to the lottery service.
Fifty-seven additional top prizes of $100,000 are up for grabs.
