‘Squid Game’ to return for second season, director confirms. ‘You leave us no choice’
“Squid Game,” the popular Netflix survival drama that has smashed records on the streaming service, will return for a second season.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of the show, confirmed in an interview with The Associated Press that he has begun working on a new season.
“So there’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice,” he said, according to an AP translation. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently, but I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.”
The first season of “Squid Game” was on its way to being the most watched show ever on Netflix when it premiered in September, McClatchy News reported.
Spoiler alert, for those of you who haven’t finished the first season: Dong-hyuk said in his interview with the AP that Lee Jung-jae will return as Gi-hun — a gambling addict who lives with his mom — for season two.
When the show was beginning to rise in popularity, Dong-hyuk told Variety he did not have plans for a second season.
“It is quite tiring just thinking about it,” the director told Variety. “But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”
But as he began toying with the idea of a second season, he said he was considering focusing on the Frontman, Forbes reported. The Frontman was the masked man who was behind the deathly competitions on the show.
