Shopper holds suspect at gunpoint in superstore after fatal stabbing, MI cops say

A man was fatally stabbed Wednesday at a superstore in Michigan, and a shopper held the suspect at gunpoint until police arrived, officials say.

Adrian police were dispatched to a Meijer store around 12:30 p.m. after reports of a stabbing in progress, officials said in a news release.

While on the way, they were told that a shopper with a concealed pistol license had intervened and was holding the suspect at gunpoint, police said.

Adrian Police Chief Vincent Emrick said the woman witnessed the stabbing and immediately pulled out her pistol and told the suspect to get on the ground, The Daily Telegram reported. She held the suspect there until police showed up.

When they arrived, police found that an 85-year-old man had been stabbed. Emrick told the Telegram he was found between the automotive and sporting goods sections with several stab wounds to the head and neck.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.

The suspect, 29, was arrested.

Police have not identified any of the people involved.

Shoppers in the store said they were shaken by the incident.

“It’s very unsettling because you just don’t hear this happening, very rarely,” Angela Garza told WTOL. She’s lived in Adrian — about 70 miles southwest of Detroit — for 18 years.

“I’m actually glad that there was somebody there with their license to stop the guy,” another customer told the outlet. “Because if he did that to this person, who knows who else he’d do it to.”

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact investigators at 517-264-4808.
