Hurricane Laura pounds Texas and Louisiana. Here are early reports of damage

Hurricane Laura came ashore at 1 a.m. Central time as a Category 4 storm, making it difficult to see just how much damage was being created as 150 mph winds whipped the Louisiana coast.

But Twitter users soon began posting about the impact, showing high winds ripping structures apart, heavy rain flooding streets and debris blocking roads.

Laura quickly weakened to a Category 2 hurricane as it moved inland, and became a tropical storm by midday, with winds in the 70 mph range. More than 600,000 people were without power in the state on Thursday afternoon, according to PowerOutageUS.com.
