‘No thanks, I’ll take water.’ Social media responds to Budweiser’s alcohol-free beer

Ah, 2020. It served up the coronavirus pandemic and murder hornets and now, alcohol-free Budweiser.

Budweiser Zero is a 50-calorie brew with no alcohol and no sugar geared toward “health conscious drinkers,” CNN reported. It’s now available nationwide.

Non-alcoholic beers are growing in popularity. Along with a number of craft breweries, Heineken, Busch, O’Doul’s and Beck’s each have their own non-alcoholic offerings.

The latter three are owned by Anheuser Busch and do include small amounts of alcohol, according to CNN, but Budweiser Zero is the company’s first with no alcohol at all.

In fact, non-alcoholic beer sales have swelled 40% in dollars this year and 30% by volume, Eric Shepard, vice president of Beer Marketer’s Insights, told USA Today.

But the internet isn’t exactly convinced that alcohol-free beer is as good as the real thing.

As news of Bud Zero spread, so did reactions on social media. The general consensus: “why?”

“An alcohol free, 50 calorie Budweiser? No thanks, I’ll take water,” one Twitter user wrote.

“Budweiser Zero definitely seems like a good fit for 2020,” wrote another.

“I’m so glad they’re finally making that nonalcoholic Budweiser Zero,” a third wrote. “That pesky booze has interrupted the complex flavor palate long enough.”
