Wild party at YouTube star’s mansion in pandemic prompts California city to crack down

The party had it all, video shows: People dancing and drinking, swinging from an excavator crane and pulling a car into a California mansion’s lobby.

But the mayor of Calabasas isn’t laughing about the event hosted July 11 by YouTube star Jake Paul at his home in the wealthy Southern California city, the Los Angeles Times reports.

“They’re having this large party, no social distancing, no masks, it’s just a big huge disregard for everything that everybody is trying to do to get things back to functioning,” said Mayor Alicia Weintraub, KTTV reported.

“It’s really just a party acting like COVID does not exist, it’s acting that businesses aren’t closed,” Weintraub said, according to the station.

“The city is considering taking action” against the 23-year-old YouTube star over the party, KCBS reported. Weintraub also announced a $100 fine for people not wearing face masks in public and a ban on large gatherings.

“The warning period is over,” Weintraub said, according to KCBS.

Paul did not respond to KTTV’s request for comment.

A video of the event shows dozens of party-goers mingling, playing dice, being lifted into the air by an excavator crane on a lawn outside, playing video games and parking an SUV inside the home.

“It’s completely unacceptable to be interacting with people like that during this time,” Weintraub said, the Los Angeles Times reported. “People need to be wearing masks and people need to be keeping their distance. You can’t be having parties with over 100 people.”

But the mayor said Paul isn’t the only person in Calabasas, an exclusive suburb of Los Angeles also home to several members of the Kardashian family, playing fast and loose with coronavirus restrictions. A recent baby shower there had 200 attendees, according to the publication.

More than 14.9 million cases of the COVID-19 virus have been confirmed worldwide with more than 617,000 deaths as of Wednesday, July 22, according to Johns Hopkins University. The United States has more than 3.9 million confirmed cases with more than 142,000 deaths.

The World Health Organization has declared coronavirus a global pandemic. In the United States, President Donald Trump has declared a national emergency.
