I’ve watched you coach, Sessions says in blistering reply to Senate foe Tuberville
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions challenged Alabama Republican Senate opponent Tommy Tuberville – but not in the usual political way.
He challenged him on Twitter - by ripping the former SEC coach’s college football past.
Before the Twitter kerfuffle, Sessions challenged Tuberville to a series of debates in a letter released on Tuesday.
“It’s time for you to stop running away, and face me and the voters of Alabama,” Sessions wrote. “No candidate who is scared to debate or unable to defend our values is worthy of support from the people of Alabama. I challenge you to a series of five debates before the voters of Alabama, one for each major media market in our state. This will allow us to discuss the unique issues of each geographic area, as well as national and international issues.”
Tuberville responded to the letter with a statement saying “If coaching taught me anything, it’s that you don’t let the losing team dictate the game when you’re sitting on a lead,” as reported by the Montgomery Advertiser.
The former two-time SEC coach of the year has more than 20 years of coaching under his belt with numerous schools including Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss and Texas Tech. He’s won American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year, the Paul “Bear” Byrant Award, and the Walter Camp Coach of the Year.
Both opponents have been exchanging words since Tuberville edged out Sessions in the GOP primary in March by less than 2 points. Since both candidates got less than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff is required, according to The Hill.
