Breaking quarantine: Washington man arrested after flying to Hawaii, cops say

An Olympia man was arrested on Thursday after police said he flew to Hawaii and broke coronavirus quarantine rules, according to a news release.

Devin Martin, 50, of Olympia, Washington, was arrested on charges of violating Hawaii’s 14-day quarantine order, according to a post on the Kauai Police Department’s Facebook.

Martin flew to Kauai on an Alaska Airlines flight from Washington and airport security told him about the 14-day quarantine, according to the release. He allegedly “refused to find suitable lodging” after not arranging for accommodations, police said.

Martin was arrested and didn’t have any signs of COVID-19, police said. He was cleared by Wilcox Hospital before he was jailed and is expected to return to Hawaii’s mainland today.

All travelers to Hawaii are required to quarantine for 14 days in a move to contain the spread of the virus, according to Hawaii News Now. Only those carrying out “essential functions” are exempt, the outlet reported.
