Teen who died after being dragged by car likely got caught in seat belt, Texas cops say

A teen in Texas is dead after police say she was found covered in road rash after being dragged behind a car early Sunday.

When police in San Antonio responded to the scene of a crash outside a local tire shop around 3:30 a.m., they found Steven Medina, 18, passed out and extremely intoxicated, KSAT reported.

He was in the driver’s seat of the car, according to San Antonio Express-News. Officers found Jessica Medina, 16, outside the back passenger door with her neck and arm caught in a seat belt and road rash covering her body, according to the newspaper.

She was pronounced dead at the scene, the Express-News reported.

Police say they believe she was dragged by the car, according to KSAT.

Jessica’s family told WOAI she and Steven Medina were not related and that she didn’t know him.

Her aunt, Sarah Riojas, said Jessica and a group of girls were hanging out before meeting up with Steven, according to the outlet. She says the girls asked to get out of Steven’s car when they became uncomfortable with his “erratic” driving, WOAI reported.

“The other girls were already out, and [Jessica] was getting out,” Riojas said, according to the outlet. “But they kept telling me, ‘Her seat belt got stuck.’”

Steven Medina was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter, jail records indicate. His bond was set at $75,000.
