Getaway driver runs over accomplice with U-Haul during police chase, Texas cops say

A woman in Texas was arrested Tuesday after police say she ran over her accomplice with a U-Haul during a high-speed chase.

At 12:45 a.m., Houston police received a call about a burglary at Sunny’s Food Store, KHOU reported.

Police say Diawannah Thomas, 54, waited in the driver’s seat of a U-Haul truck as three men used bolt cutters to break into the store and steal beer, clothing and “smoke paraphernalia” before loading it into the U-Haul, KTRK reported. They’d also tried to use the cutters on the ATM but to no avail, police say.

An off-duty officer in the area spotted the burglars and called for back up, KHOU reported. When police arrived, officials say Thomas hit the gas.

The chase went on for 25 miles and lasted 26 minutes, a prosecutor said, according to KTRK.

One man jumped safely from the moving truck, but another slipped during his attempt and ended up dangling from the passenger-side mirror, the Houston Chronicle reported. When Thomas swerved, the man fell under the car and was run over, police say.

The 40-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, KHOU reported.

Thomas continued to speed away from police before “intentionally” ramming a patrol vehicle with two officers inside, Houston police said in a news release. No one was injured.

Thomas was arrested. Police say they believe she was under the influence at the time of the crash, according to the release.

Thomas is charged with aggravated assault and driving while intoxicated, police say. Her bond was set at $150,000, KTRK reported.

An investigation is ongoing.
