A rival for Rocky? ‘Epic’ Reba McEntire statue may be built in her Oklahoma hometown
The Oklahoma hometown of Reba McEntire might build an 11-foot tribute to the country singer.
The lieutenant governor is a fan. He even compared it to the “Rocky” statue in Philadelphia.
Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell, who’s also the state secretary of tourism and branding, was watching the Seattle Seahawks playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday when the broadcast showed the statue of the fictional boxer played by Sylvester Stallone.
That’s right, Rocky and Reba could duke it out — in a match of statues.
McEntire was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, in 1955 and raised on a ranch in nearby Chockie before growing up to be dubbed the “Queen of Country,” according to the Oklahoma tourism website.
Now, the town is considering whether to build an 11-foot statue of McEntire, KHBS reported. The city’s tourism department wants to erect the statue downtown, the Fort Smith, Arkansas, TV station reported.
“I get calls all the time from people around the country asking what we have Reba McEntire-wise,” Tourism Coordinator Eddie Gray told the McAlester News-Capital. “I have nothing to offer. This is a void we have to fill.”
The city has received a “blessing” from McEntire and her team, Gray told the newspaper.
The City Council will decide whether to build the proposed statue estimated to cost $60,000, according to the McAlester News-Capital.
