Officer shoves woman to safety - then is struck by an oncoming car, Texas police say

A Texas police officer placed his life on the line while pushing a woman out of the way of an oncoming vehicle, the Cumby Police Department said on Facebook.

Officer Nicholas Geer stopped to help a stranded motorist on the Interstate 30 north service road near mile marker 115 in Cumby, a small town about 65 miles northeast of Dallas. A woman with a second car was also on the scene, attempting to charge the stranded vehicle’s battery with jumper cables, police said.

Police said “a motorist traveling eastbound struck the vehicle that was stranded and struck Officer Geer while he was standing at the vehicle,” authorities said. Geer was thrown over the stranded vehicle and landed in the median between the service road and freeway.

Before being hit, Geer pushed the stranded motorist out of the path of the oncoming car, according to the Facebook post.

The woman who had stopped and was trying to charge the battery was struck after the oncoming car hit the stranded vehicle, pinning her between it and her car, police said.

She was taken to an emergency room in Greenville for what was thought to be a broken leg, police said.

Geer was taken to a hospital in Sulphur Springs where he was checked from “head to toe,” police said. His diagnosis showed “no broken bones, no torn muscles, and no head injuries.”

“This was GOD all the way folks and we are thankful that Officer Geer is going to be good to go in a few days,” authorities said. “Thank you all for your concerns, prayers and phone calls!”
