Memorial service set for Sundance Square ‘greeter’
A memorial service for Charlie Joyner, a fixture at Sundance Square, will be at noon May 14 in the Rio Grande Room of the Worthington Renaissance Hotel, 200 Main St. in downtown Fort Worth.
Mr. Joyner died Saturday of pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Joyner, who lost both legs in 1988 while trying to hop a freight train, was known as Fort Worth’s unofficial greeter. For more than 20 years, he sat at Third and Houston streets, waving to pedestrians and often offering a kind word as they passed.
He befriended everyone he could and gathered a following over the years. Friends provided him food and money. For the past few years, he lived at the Presbyterian Night Shelter. — Sandra Baker
