Grace’s career was taken from her before it even began. She had just graduated dental school 12 days before having a stroke in October 2018.

Now, she a single mother of five struggling with a disability as the stroke left her paralyzed on her left side.

In her letter to the Goodfellows Fund, Grace wrote: “Disability only covers my bills, which I’m thankful for, but I have no money for birthday gifts nor Christmas gifts, no money for school clothes or shoes. I rely on places like you guys a lot, so thank you for what you do. Its deeply appreciated and much-needed for parents in my position.”

Helping folks like Grace is what Goodfellows does. The Star-Telegram charity is once again providing a $50 tax-free gift certificate for a child to get trendy new clothing from Old Navy Stores. The goal is to serve 12,000 children in need in Tarrant County.

“I don’t get child support, which would help if they would keep a job and pay it,” Grace continued. “So I thank you for all your help.”

About the Goodfellows Fund

The story on the Goodfellows website describes its beginning as an offshoot of the first newspaper charity drive in the United States, started by the Chicago Tribune on Dec. 10, 1909. A Chicago city attorney wrote a letter challenging his friends to donate the money they would have spent on holiday partying to charity.

A couple years later, the Advertising Club of Fort Worth staged the first local Goodfellows campaign. On the day after Thanksgiving in 1912, Publisher Amon G. Carter brought the tradition to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
