Dakota wants to get herself and her kids out of her husband’s way.

“He’s in prison for theft, for drug possession, and for domestic violence,” Dakota said. “He knows where we live and he’s getting out soon. I’m afraid for me and my kids. They’re scared of him.”

She left her husband before he got arrested, escaping with only the clothes on her and her three children’s backs, Dakota said. There were nights spent in hotel rooms, and even in her car. With divorce papers and a protective order delayed by red tape, court costs and attorney fees, the mom has struggled to keep them together. What’s left when the rent and bills are paid and some groceries bought isn’t enough for Christmas presents. The kids are younger than 11.

Fortunately, the Goodfellow Fund stepped up with three $50 J.C. Penney gift cards usable for clothes and shoes.

“I got my kids some coats, winter boots for my girls and tougher shoes for my son,” Dakota said. “They were getting pretty cold.”

Already using their Christmas presents, the kids may not find anything under the tree this year. Kind of a moot point for someone who may not even have a tree to decorate this year.

However, things have started to look less grim. Dakota got approved for housing assistance and found an apartment. Also, she’s expecting a call from a distribution center about a job offer.

“I applied for an angel tree [gifts for the kids], and if I get that job maybe I can get them a few little things,” she said.

And as grateful as she is to Goodfellows, Dakota thinks she won’t be asking them for help again.

“I plan to move away from the area,” she said. “I have family in California and New Mexico. I’m not looking forward to uprooting my kids. But for us to be happy and safe, something has to be done. One way or another I’m getting my kids out of this.”

Despite everything, Dakota remains optimistic.

“Regardless of all I’ve been through I haven’t lost faith,” she said. “There are better days to come.”
