Beronica had a nice car.

“It was a convertible, from when I was single,” said the Arlington mother of three.

But because the car really wasn’t big enough and its ragtop started leaking, “I just got rid of it,” Beronica said. Her husband, who makes only enough money to pay their bills, rides to work with a friend. But she’s unemployed — every job she’s found requires her to have wheels.

To put good shoes on her kids’ feet this year, she turned to Goodfellows.

“I never have enough to pay for good shoes,” Beronica said. “I always end up buying shoes from the [discount store].”

With the $50 J.C. Penney gift cards she got for Mario, 10, Liset, 9, and Alexander, 5, Beronica not only bought Skechers but also took advantage of a sale and got two or three shirts for each of them.

“I couldn’t wait until Christmas; they needed the shoes now,” she said. “These are good shoes. The kids will outgrow them instead of wearing them out, because they’re tough. Thanks to all the wonderful people who help out Goodfellows.”

Beronica also “got the kids on the Salvation Army Angel Tree so they’ll have toys from Santa.”

Beronica and her husband hope to find a good car next year when they get their income tax refund. Maybe their circumstances will improve enough to allow them to become Goodfellows themselves.

“It’s a great thing they do,” she said. “They help a lot of people. If more people would donate there would be a lot more kids who could at least have a good pair of shoes.”
