Wounded Fort Worth officer released from hospital

A police officer shot in the finger and lower abdomen nearly two weeks ago was released from the hospital Wednesday.

Sgt. Shane Drake was wheeled out of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth at 3 p.m. wearing a Texas A&M T-shirt. Well-wishers including hospital staff and officers lined the street.

Drake had been hospitalized since the night of Jan. 29.

Drake and other officers were called to a house in the 4800 block of Hildring Drive about 7 that night and they were pointed toward the back bedroom of a 40-year-old man who had shut himself inside, police previously told the Star-Telegram.

When the door opened, a man later identified as Wendall King fired at the officers, striking Drake. The officers killed King.

“Sergeant Drake is recovering nicely and will be back to work as soon as possible,” Sgt. Steve Enright, a police spokesman, wrote in an email. “He did extend his thanks for all the well wishes and prayers not only for himself but for all Fort Worth officers from the citizens of Fort Worth.”
