After shooting dog, Fort Worth officer assisted with first aid

An officer shot a charging pit bull this week and then loaned its owner a tactical medical kit to give the wounded animal first aid, police said Friday.

Officers responded to a call of a pit bull running loose about 10:55 a.m. Thursday in a wooded area near Heron Drive and Loop 820 and near Lake Worth. The officers followed truck tire tracks to a pickup parked in the woods and saw a tent nearby, a news release from the Fort Worth Police Department said.

The officers yelled at the tent to announce their identity and the tent began to shake and they heard barking coming from inside. Officers called out to the tent occupant to hold the dog but a pit bull came charging out, police said.

A officer fired a shotgun, striking the animal in the shoulder, the release said. The dog ran off but was coaxed back and was treated by its owner using the police tactical medical kit, the release said.

The owner then took the dog to a veterinarian for treatment.
