Teen arrested over faked kidnapping in Glenn Heights, police say
A 17-year-old girl was arrested Thursday morning and accused of making up a story that she had been kidnapped in Glenn Heights over the weekend by masked suspects.
Keidra Kirby was taken into custody shortly after 10 a.m. at her home in Glenn Heights
Kirby was booked in at the Glenn Heights police department and taken to the Dallas County Jail. Glenn Heights is in Dallas and Ellis counties just south of Dallas.
The teen is expected to be charged with making a false report to a peace officer, a Class B misdemeanor.
If she is convicted, Kirby faces a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine.
Two juveniles reported to Glenn Heights police that Kirby was kidnapped about 7 p.m. Saturday in the 400 block of Star Gazer in Glenn Heights by masked suspects who put her in a white van.
Based on information from witnesses, an Amber Alert was activated as national, state and local authorities assisted Glenn Heights police in searching for Kirby.
Early Sunday, Kirby contacted her grandmother and authorities found her safe in Dallas.
When she was interviewed by authorities, Kirby provided information that was consistent with what witnesses had said about the kidnapping, Glenn Heights Police Chief Phillip Prasifka said in a Thursday news release.
“As the investigation evolved, inconsistencies began to surface,” Prasifka said. “In the days following, the investigators spoke again to the two juvenile witnesses who recanted their original statements regarding the alleged kidnapping.”
On Wednesday, investigators spoke to two adults who corroborated the juveniles’ new statements, Glenn Heights police said.
During a Wednesday interview with investigators, Kirby admitted that she was not kidnapped and had left willingly with people, the police chief said Thursday.
