A robbery suspect shot and wounded by a patrol officer was identified as Walter Saravia of Fort Worth, police said Monday.

Saravia remained in an area hospital Monday after being shot early Sunday during what police say was a holdup.

He faces three charges of aggravated assault of a public servant and one count of aggravated robbery, Sgt. Steve Enright said Monday in an email.

Saravia is accused of robbery and pointing what police say was a rifle at them at the Quick Way Food Store, 6101 E. Rosedale St.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the robbery call about 3:45 a.m. at the store.

As they arrived, officers saw a suspect inside. “They observed a single suspect armed with what appeared to be a rifle,” officer Brad Perez said in a Sunday news release.

At the same time, officers were in contact with an employee who was hiding in the cooler, police said.

On several occasions, officers ordered the suspect out of the store in English and Spanish over a public address system, Perez said.

The suspect was shot once by an officer after he raised an apparent weapon several times toward the officers, police said. He was then taken into custody and to a local hospital.

Officers also located the employee in the cooler.

A criminal investigation is underway and Fort Worth police are conducting an administrative investigation of the officer, who has been on the force since August 2013, Perez said.

The officer whom authorities did not identify, is assigned to the east patrol division and has been placed on administrative leave, Perez said.
