Bring an umbrella to Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival on Sunday

If you’re planning on heading downtown Sunday for the final day of the Main St. Fort Worth Arts Festival, bring an umbrella.

Rain is expected to fall throughout the day as a storm system crawls across the area, dumping 4 to 6 inches of rain through Tuesday.

Main St. officials say rain alone won’t cause problems, but they’ll be watchful of heavy winds and lightning, which could force the festival to shut down early. That’s what happened in 2014, when wind gusts of 35 to 40 mph ended the festival on its final day.

As of Saturday evening, the storm system was “pretty much spinning its wheels” out west, producing snow in New Mexico and Colorado, said Steve Fano, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth.

“We expect areas in the west to see storms [Sunday], but most of those storms won’t reach the I-35 corridor until closer to sunrise.”

Showers and thunderstorms will be more widespread as they continue through Monday morning.

The storm system is moving very slowly, which means it will be in no hurry when it gets here, Fano said. That’s why flash-flood watches that go into effect at 6 a.m. Sunday will continue through Tuesday morning.

“It’s not going to rain the entire time, but there will be a lot of storms around,” Fano said. “People pretty much just need to prepare for an extended period of unsettled weather.”

The forecasters say that while the system is not expected to produce the kind of hail and winds that Monday’s storms inflicted — especially in Wylie — some storms could be severe and produce hail. “And certainly straight-line winds and some tornadoes can’t be ruled out,” Fano said.
