Manziel’s ex-girlfriend says he repeatedly struck her during fight
Acting as if he were “on some kind of drugs,” Johnny Manziel repeatedly struck his ex-girlfriend during a fight that began early Saturday at a Dallas hotel and continued as he drove her home to Fort Worth, according to her account to Fort Worth police.
The police report was released Thursday.
Colleen Crowley, 23, told officers she had been with Manziel, 23, and others at Hotel ZaZa in Dallas but that they were left alone when the other friends left.
She said Manziel, a Cleveland Browns quarterback, began acting aggressively toward her, as if “he was on some kind of drugs,” the report states. She insisted to police, however, that Manziel was not intoxicated.
She said Manziel struck her several times, including in the left ear, and then insisted on driving her home to Fort Worth because he did not want her to drive after drinking.
On the ride home, she told officers, he struck her several times but she was “somewhat vague on the details of the assault,” according to report, in which numerous details were blacked out.
Crowley said upon arriving at her apartment complex in the 2100 block of Park Hill Drive near TCU, she ran in and out of her front door in attempt to get away from Manziel. The report says she became irritated when officers asked her if Manziel had assaulted her at the apartment.
She refused treatment by a MedStar crew, the report states.
She told officers she ran to a neighbor’s door to seek help, at which time Manziel ran off.
A neighbor called 911, telling dispatchers she had come out to her balcony after hearing one of her neighbors screaming.
“She said her boyfriend had beat her up,” the neighbor said in the 911 call, released by the police department Thursday. “… She didn’t want me to call you, but I think it’s the right thing.”
Crowley became increasingly uncooperative as she talked to officers, the report states, refusing to answer additional questions and not allowing photographs to be taken.
She did express concern about Manziel, prompting police to dispatch a helicopter to search for him in the area.
After several attempts to locate Manziel, including contacting his parents, who had recently moved to Fort Worth, officers talked to his father who said he had seen his son and that he was “doing fine,” the report states.
The father asked officers not contact him again unless they had a warrant, the report states.
Fort Worth police said Thursday that they do not expect to pursue charges against Manziel.
Fort Worth police alerted Dallas police about a possible assault in their jurisdiction. In a statement issued Thursday, Dallas police said their part of the investigation is complete. “Investigative efforts to date have not resulted in the filing of a criminal complaint and the incident is determined to be closed,” the statement said
On Thursday, Johnny Manziel’s father, Paul Manziel, declined to comment on his conversation with Fort Worth police or the incident involving his son.
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about,” Paul Manziel said. “I haven’t read the report. Until I read it, I couldn’t comment on anything because I don’t know what it says.”
Manziel’s mother could not be reached to comment.
TMZ reported that Manziel told TMZ Sports that he did not strike Crowley, saying “It didn’t happen.”
Neither Manziel nor Crowley could be reached to comment Thursday.
Report from WFAA TV
In an exclusive report by Star-Telegram media partner WFAA, Crowley told authorities that she is afraid for her safety and has drafted an order of protection to be presented to a Tarrant County district court judge.
Sources told WFAA that on the night of Jan. 29, Crowley and three friends started the evening off at Victor Tangos, a restaurant in the Knox-Henderson neighborhood in Dallas, and bar-hopped for a few hours before she met Manziel in his room at Hotel ZaZa.
The sources asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
While in his room, they argued about another girl. Crowley told police she tried to leave the room, but that Manziel wouldn’t let her, according to the WFAA report.
Crowley told police Manziel “restrained” her in some manner and “led” her down a back stairway to the valet area, where she “was crying and begged the valet, ‘Please don’t let him take me. I’m scared for my life!’ ”
She said the valet told her, “I don’t know what to do” and let Manziel leave with her, WFAA reported.
The sources said that as Manziel drove Crowley to Fort Worth, she yelled at him, “I hate you!” She said he replied that “he was going to drop me off, take my car and go kill himself,” the sources said.
At some point, Manziel “started laughing” and then yelled at her to “shut up or I’ll kill us both.”
She says they finally made it to her Fort Worth apartment where the argument continued.
At one point, according to the WFAA report, she said she was in the kitchen and “out of fear for my life, I pulled a knife out of my knife block and advanced toward him,” Crowley told police.
On his way out in Cleveland
In October, police in Avon, Ohio, were called after Manziel and Crowley got into a heated argument. The couple admitted that they had been drinking and Manziel was allowed to leave with Crowley.
On Tuesday, the Browns released a statement, indicating they plan to release Manziel in March.
“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field,” Browns vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said in a statement. “Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization. His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules.”
Manziel, a Heisman Trophy winner from Texas A&M, was 2-6 as a starter in two seasons with the Browns, but he fell out of favor with the team and fans after a series of missteps, mostly off the field.
There have been a flurry of Manziel sightings in the DFW area in the past couple of weeks, the most recent coming at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday when he attended a Dallas Mavericks’ game.
He’s been spotted in Dallas bars, and on Jan. 16 Manziel was in a Fort Worth liquor store buying a $120 bottle of tequilia. While he was not breaking any laws, the purchase came a year after Manziel entered a rehab center that specializes in the treatment of drug and alcohol abuse.
In a public statement released in April, Manziel apologized to the Browns and their fans, saying that what he had “learned in the last couple of months has been tremendous.”
