A 21-year-old man shot dead on a Fort Worth street earlier this month had gone to the location to purchase marijuana, one of the witnesses told police.

Cameron Jennings and two friends had agreed to meet Nathan Herrera-Lunsford at Jennings’ house in the 4600 block of Birchbend Lane on Jan. 19, where one of the friends had planned to sell Lunsford an ounce of marijuana for $250, one of Jennings friends told investigators.

The friend told homicide detectives that the trio were “nervous that Nathan may try and rip them off during the drug transaction,” according to an arrest warrant affidavit, written by Detective Kyle Sullivan.

The friend told police he had been sitting in Jennings’ car when Herrera-Lunsford arrived and approached his two friends, who were standing outside.

The friend said he had looked down when he heard three gunshots ring out. He looked back up to see Herrera-Lunsford running with the bag of marijuana and then collapse in the street, the affidavit states.

The friend told police he then sped away in Jennings’ car and spotted Jennings running down the street with a black revolver in hand. The friend said Jennings had previously shown him the .38 snub-nose revolver that he had reportedly taken without permission from his grandmother, the affidavit states.

The friend said he picked up Jennings, who then dropped him off at a nearby park.

When interviewed by investigators, Jennings said he had no knowledge of the shooting and was not at home when the shooting occurred. His mother also told detectives that her son was not at home at the time of the shooting, but rather at a nearby library picking up his grandmother.

Jennings was formally charged Monday with murder in the case. He remains in the Tarrant County Jail with bail set at $250,000.

Police say they expect no other arrests in the case.

Herrera-Lunsford graduated in 2012 from Keller Central High School and was the father of a 15-month-old son.

Jennings was sentenced in December to six months of deferred probation on a possession of marijuana charge. Court records show prosecutors filed a motion Wednesday to revoke his probation in that case.
