Chance of sleet, snow mainly south of Fort Worth

With ESPN’s Mike & Mike morning show coming live out of Sundance Square Plaza Thursday, broadcaster Mike Greenberg welcomed listeners to a “somewhat frigid Fort Worth.”

Hopefully he won’t be adding descriptions of sleet and snow to the mix.

Thursday morning’s low temperature was 16 degrees at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, behind the record low of 11 set in 1976 — but the coldest it’s been in North Texas since Jan. 6 of last year, when it was 15.

The cold temperatures will hang around for the next few days, and with them come a slight chance of sleet and snow for North Texas on Friday.

“There’s just a very slight chance,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Lamont Bain. “The better chances of widespread snow or sleet will be south of this area.”

Areas south of Interstate 20 could see some wintry mix Friday morning and Texas Department of Transportation workers have already began treating bridges and overpasses throughout North Texas — just in case.

Friday morning’s low should be around 28 degrees and Saturday morning will bring temperatures closer to 24, according to the National Weather Service office in Fort Worth.

Forecasts show a 40 to 50 percent chance of freezing rain Saturday night and Sunday morning, switching to rain later Sunday, when temperatures are expected to climb into the low 40s. There should not be significant accumulation during the weekend and no major problems on overpasses and bridges in Tarrant County and nearby counties.

That’s quite a contrast to Green Bay, where the Cowboys play the Packers Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s low in Green Bay is expected to be 2 degrees, warming up to 16 later in the day.
