Arrests made in slaying of former Wyatt High School track star

Three people have been jailed in connection with the November robbery and fatal shooting of a former Wyatt High School track star and state champion.

William James Harris, 22, was arrested on a capital murder warrant early Tuesday in connection with Nov. 10 death of Chester Lee Johnson Jr.

Last week, two other suspects — 17-year-old Anthony Marshal and 21-year-old Candra Sanders —were also arrested on capital murder warrants in the case.

Johnson, 32, was found shot in his 1999 four-door Acura at about 2:20 a.m. Nov. 10 in the 3700 block of Village Creek Road in east Fort Worth. He was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, where he died from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.

No further details about the case were provided by police Wednesday.

Marshal and Sanders remained in the Tarrant County Jail Wednesday with bail set at $250,000 for each. Harris was being held Wednesday in the Mansfield jail with his bail also set at $250,000, jail records show.

Johnson ran track at Wyatt from 1998 to 2002, and excelled as a sprinter.

As a sophomore in 2000, he was a member of the 400-meter relay team that won the Class 4A (now5A) state title with a season-best time of 40.46 seconds.

His close friend and teammate, Darrent Williams, went on to play cornerback for the Denver Broncos. Williams, 24, had just finished his second NFL season when he was fatally shot Jan. 1, 2007, while leaving a Denver nightclub in a limousine.

Willie Clark was found guilty of murder in 2010 in Williams’ death and sentenced to life in prison plus 1,152 years.
