Timeline: Ethan Couch’s troubled life

Ethan Couch, 18, and his mother, Tonya, 48, were detained Monday in Mexico, ending a manhunt that began this month when the teen’s probation officer was unable to contact him.

Here are key events in Couch’s story:

Feb. 19, 2013 — Couch is found in a pickup with a beer and a bottle of vodka. He is later cited for minor in possession.

June 15, 2013 — After stealing alcohol from a convenience store, Couch drives his father’s pickup into a group of pedestrians in Burleson. Four people are killed and nine injured. His blood alcohol level was measured at three times the legal limit.

Dec. 10, 2013 — Judge Jean Boyd, a juvenile judge in Tarrant County who has since retired, sentences Couch to 10 years of probation and orders him to undergo intensive therapy at a long-term facility. Prosecutors had sought a 20-year sentence in a state lockup.

Feb. 19, 2014 — Couch begins taxpayer-funded treatment at North Texas State Hospital in Vernon.

Aug. 19, 2014 — Couch’s father, Fred, is arrested and accused of impersonating a police officer.

Dec. 2, 1015A short video posted on Twitter shows a teen who appears to be Couch playing beer pong at a party, which would be a probation violation.

Dec. 11A warrant is issued and a manhunt for Couch begins after his probation officer is unable to contact him. The home he rented with his mother near Eagle Mountain Lake was found empty.

Dec. 18 U.S. marshals join the search for Couch and his mother.

Dec. 28 — Couch, now 18, and his mother, Tonya, are detained in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Dec. 29 — At a morning news conference, Tarrant County authorities credit good police work and say they will breathe easier when Couch is back in the United States.
