Man shot by Fort Worth police still in hospital

The suspect in Saturday’s officer-involved shooting in north Fort Worth remained in intensive care Wednesday with injuries to his shoulder, lung and hip, his father said.

Jeremi Rainwater, 34, is facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief. Fort Worth police say he raised a pistol in front of officers outside of his home in the 6700 block of Friendsway Drive late Saturday.

One officer, Andrew Smith, shot Rainwater multiple times, police said.

Smith is assigned to the Zero Tolerance unit, said Sgt. Steven Enright, a police spokesman. He was commissioned in September 2010. He was still on administrative leave Wednesday as the department continued to investigate the shooting.

Police have told Rainwater’s father, Daniel Rainwater, that his injuries were non-life threatening.

The incident Saturday started at the Dublin Square bar near I-35W and Western Center Boulevard.

An argument occurred at the restaurant, and the suspect went to the parking lot and fired a gun at an unoccupied, parked vehicle, police said.

Officers identified the suspect, and then went to the suspect’s residence nearby on Friendsway Drive. As police approached the home, the suspect “emerged from it with a pistol in his hand,” police said.

The suspect raised the gun and was ordered by officers to drop it to the ground. The suspect refused and was shot multiple times by one of the officers, police said.

Daniel Rainwater hasn’t been able to speak with his son yet.

“He’s not the type that would not comply with [police],” he said from Tyler on Wednesday. “I hope in my heart he wasn't hoping that they would take him out. He's been very distraught. I was praying for some way to get word to him that I loved him, and that I knew what was going on and that he wasn’t alone.”

Rainwater, who grew up in East Texas and went to high school in Carthage, has no previous charges in Tarrant County.

He works at an automotive shop and previously managed a Jiffy Lube in the Fort Worth area, his father said.
