Fort Worth’s new water director will start work in April, city officials announced.

John Robert Carman is the public utilities director for the city of Raleigh, N.C., and has more than 30 years of experience in water and waste water, according to a city news release.

“Carman is a great fit for Fort Worth as we try to balance cost for water service against the increasing demand of the nation’s fastest growing big city,” said City Manager David Cooke said. “He has built his career working in cities and regions dealing with growth, and he has done it at every level of the business.”

Carman began his career in Utah, where he was a wastewater plant operator from 1979 to 1994. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil and environmental engineering from the University of Utah and a master’s degree in civil and environmental engineering.

Frank Crumb, the former water director, retired Sept. 12 after more than 30 year with the city. He was named acting water director in 2004 and took over as water director in 2005. — Caty Hirst
