Man killed in Forest Hill DWI wreck was on way to hospital
Early Sunday, George Moon became ill and needed to go to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
He called his niece, who went with her adult daughter to Moon’s home on Panama Drive and picked him up along with his wife, Beverly Gayle Moon, 63.
Moon, 76, and his wife never made it.
They were killed early Sunday when a suspected drunken driver crashed a sports utility vehicle into them in a residential neighborhood. The couple were backseat passengers in the car driven by the niece’s daughter.
“It’s all been very shocking,” said George Moon’s cousin, Janelle Redding of Fort Worth. “She had left us a message on Halloween saying she was sorry that they had missed us. Everything sounded fine.”
Moon’s niece, 45, was seriously injured and remained in an area hospital Tuesday. Her daughter was treated and released.
Police arrested Jose Salinas-Gomez, 23, of Florida at the scene of the accident at Hartman Road and Richard Street in a residential neighborhood. Salinas-Gomez faces charges of intoxication assault in the wreck, which occurred shortly after 3 a.m. Sunday
Salinas-Gomez was in the Forest Hill Jail on Tuesday with bail set at $250,000 in each intoxication manslaughter case and $125,000 in each intoxication assault case.
Friends and Redding said Tuesday that the Moons were retired and had been married for more than 20 years.
They were longtime members of a coffee group of residents, city officials and police officers that gathered at McDonald’s near the Tarrant County College South Campus in Fort Worth.
For three years, the Moons, who had met at a Fort Worth coffee shop, had been going to the fast-food restaurant early in the morning and spending a couple of hours talking to friends.
“I’ve known George for 40 years,” said Patsy Toomer of Fort Worth, one of the coffee group members. “They would even come on Sunday before church.”
