Aledo, Chisholm Trail, Birdville and Southwest high schools are among 31 Texas schools competing for the Class 5A state title Tuesday at San Antonio’s Alamodome.

High school bands will showcase their mastery of music and marching during a preliminary round that starts at 7 a.m. Ten Class 5A bands will make the final round which begins about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

“We are very excited,” said Stacey Dunn, band director for Fort Worth’s Southwest Raider Band.

He said this is the third time the Raider band made it to state level competition in the last eight years. “Our goal is to make it to finals,” Dunn said. “We want to make finals.”

Under the UIL’s rotating competition schedule, Class 1A, 2A, 3A and 5A marching bands compete this year at state. Next year, Class 4A and 6A marching bands will have the chance to advance to San Antonio.

High school bands advanced to state after competing in regional and area competitions. Aledo and Birdville marching bands have both made it to state level competition five times.

Aledo band director Joey Paul said it is his band’s fifth time to go to state since 2000.

“We’ve never won the first-place state marching contest,” Paul said, adding that the highest they have placed is sixth.

“The kids are hyped. They are pumped,” Paul said.

Mike Cheripka, Birdville High School’s director of bands, said they placed second in 2005 — the band’s best showing.

Chisholm Trail High School, in the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw district, is only 4 years old and has never been to state. The school is holding a community rally/send-off today for the “Ranger Regiment.”
