Fall weather arriving; Halloween could be rainy

Cool fall weather Monday is expected to follow the past few days’ heavy rains in the DFW area, according to Fort Worth meteorologists, with just slight chances of rain forecast until Halloween.

“It looks like this will be our first real taste of fall weather,” said Matt Stalley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. “We are finally getting away from those 80s and 90s.”

Highs are projected in the mid-70s with lows in the 50s.

Only 0.03 inches were recorded at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport Sunday. Elsewhere, McClennan and Navarro counties remained under flash flood warnings as a result of weekend storms, Stalley said.

“There’s quite a few road closures and ongoing problems because of the past rain we’ve had,” he said.

The airport has recorded 7.57 inches since last Thursday — a rainfall high near the 1991 record, when the Metroplex saw 8.07 inches of rain during a three-day-period, Stalley said.

A levee breach in Navarro County just southwest of Rice coupled with water in the roadways were the main concerns Sunday, Stalley said.

The Navarro County Officer of Emergency Management tweeted a picture of the levee breach at FM 1126 west of Interstate 45. All but one school district in Navarro County will be closed Monday.

Rainfall totals for the same three-day-period that showered the Metroplex with 7.57 inches of rain brought Corsicana 21.04 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Waco was hit with 11.66 inches.

Though rain wasn’t expected to muddy the beginning of the week in the Metroplex, local forecasters expressed concerns about the Halloween weekend.

The next chance of rain is a 20 percent chance Thursday night, rising to 60 percent by Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

“We are still pinning down the details,” Stalley said. “There is a chance for widespread rainfall, but at this point you don’t want to start altering your Halloween plans just yet.”

He said there’s a chance that Saturday’s rains will stop by nightfall.

“It’s just too difficult to pin that down right now,” he said. “Stay tuned.”
