2 children, 3 adults hospitalized after head-on crash in Burleson
Five people were hospitalized, three in critical condition, Sunday night after a head-on collision near a Dollar General, according to city officials.
Two children were taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center, a man and a woman were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital, and another woman was taken to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital, MedStar spokesman Matt Zavadsky said.
CareFlite flew one of the children, a 3-year-old boy, to Cook Children’s in critical condition and a 67-year-old Burleson woman to JPS before 7:30 p.m., Zavadsky said.
An update on the conditions of all five patients was unavailable Monday afternoon.
MedStar responded to the 911 call at 6:52 p.m., Zavadsky said.
The crash happened in the 7100 block of Farm Road 917 just east of the Dollar General, according to the city of Burleson’s Facebook page.
A blue Honda CRV driven by the 67-year-old woman from Burleson was traveling west on FM 917 when it entered the eastbound lane, Burleson city spokeswoman Sally Ellertson said. A Kia Optima driven by a 36-year-old man from Cleburne was unable to avoid the CRV, and they collided head-on.
The 3-year-old, a 30-year-old woman and a 9-year-old boy were passengers in the Optima, Ellertson said.
The wreck also caused a large oil and fuel spill that shut down both lanes of the road until about 8 p.m.
A second crash happened at the same spot shortly after as a “result of the primary crash,” Zavadsky said. Five people were treated and released at the scene of the second crash, he said.
