Mansfield man faces federal armed robbery charge
The case of a Mansfield man accused of robbing a Grandview bank last week and then leading authorities on a high-speed chase with his daughter in the car has been turned over to federal authorities, the U.S. attorney’s office said Monday.
Michael Dwayne Bailey, 41, made his initial appearance in federal court Monday afternoon before a magistrate judge, who ordered Bailey to remain in custody pending a detention hearing Friday.
Bailey’s 19-year-old daughter, Megan, was also arrested Thursday and taken to the Johnson County Jail. No federal complaint had been filed against her as of Monday. A Johnson County Jail officer declined to say whether she was in custody Monday.
The federal complaint against Michael Bailey was filed by a Fort Worth police detective assigned to an FBI task force. According to his affidavit:
A robber walked up to the lone teller on duty at Grandview Bank about noon Thursday. He pointed a gun at her and demanded money. The robber was wearing a Texas Longhorns baseball cap, sunglasses, black leather jacket, dark glasses and a dark bandanna over the lower half of his face.
The fearful teller froze, and the robber climbed over a counter and started grabbing money. Then the teller also began pulling money out of the drawer.
In the parking lot, a motorist saw the robber run to a red car with disabled veteran license plates. The motorist followed the car as his wife called 911. Soon an Alvarado patrol officer caught up with the red car, and the pursuit began.
During the high-speed chase, which lasted more than 40 minutes, the car drove north from Grandview to Alvarado to Venus and to U.S. 287 before crashing on Davis Street in Mansfield near Texas 360, authorities said. The chase reached 150 mph at times.
The driver, Michael Bailey, was arrested after a brief foot chase, while his daughter, identified in the affidavit as M.B., remained in the car.
Bailey was wearing clothes that matched the description of the robber. “A dark-colored bandanna was lying in plain view in the car,” the affidavit said. Officers found a Smith & Wesson 9mm handgun in the car, loaded with hollow-point ammunition.
In the daughter’s purse, officers found almost $12,000, the amount stolen from the teller.
Bailey declined to answer questions after his arrest, but his daughter described going to several stores to steal clothes, including the ones he was wearing. She said he told her he wanted to rob a bank, but she didn’t think he was serious. They stopped at a building, and he got out. She did not see a sign so she did not know where they were, she said.
When Bailey came out of the building, the daughter said, he threw money at her and told her to put it in her purse.
Bailey’s case will be presented to a federal grand jury. Prosecutors will seek an armed robbery indictment, the news release said.
