Uber impostor picks up women at TCU, police say

TCU students are being urged to use caution when accepting a ride around campus after a man apparently posed as a driver for the Uber ride-sharing service and briefly picked up two women.

The incident occurred early Saturday, according to a campuswide email alert TCU sent Sunday.

The man persuaded two women to get into his car near Greene Avenue and Berry Street, saying his scheduled Uber fare had canceled and he was available to give them a ride, WFAA reported.

The driver began a conversation that the women considered inappropriate, and he tried to hug one of them before they persuaded him to pull over and let them out.

“The male left without asking for compensation for the ride, leaving the females to conclude that he was not in fact an authorized Uber driver,” TCU police said.

The man is in his mid-20s with shoulder-length dark hair, police said. He drove a four-door sedan.

Uber customers normally use a smartphone application to request a ride.

Uber’s software then sends the customer the name and photograph of the driver who is on the way, along with the driver’s vehicle make and license plate number, to prevent any confusion about whether the customer is being picked up by the correct car.
