Think it’s hot? Look at the records

The past week has felt like a run of really hot days, but this is nothing.

The record high for Sept. 2 is 109 degrees, set in 2000. The first four days of the month that year were 109, 109, 109 and 111 degrees. The record DFW highs for the rest of September are 100 degrees or higher, except for Sept. 17, 21, 23, 24 and 30.

Those days the records were 99 and 98 over the years.

The records appear to be safe this year, but temperatures should hold steady in the mid-90s over the next week, said Jennifer Dunn of the National Weather Service in Fort Worth. The average highs for the first week of September are 91-93 degrees, so it's slightly warmer than usual.

She added that there’s a small chance for a shower in the Dallas area today or Thursday.

“Typically we see our first cold fronts due to arrive in September,” Dunn said. “Right now, it looks like there might be a cold front late next week, but there's not a lot of confidence in that. Bottom line, we don't see a whole lot changing over the next seven days.”

The heat should subside into the low 80s later in the month.
