A 34-year-old motorist was killed late Tuesday when his vehicle burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash on the South Freeway, police said Wednesday.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, but authorities had not released his name Wednesday.

A woman was also injured, but her condition was not available.

The crash involved an 18-wheeler, a sport utility vehicle and a minivan, police said.

Patrol officers responded to the major accident shortly after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of the South Freeway (Interstate 35W) between Berry and Ripy streets.

The man was driving the SUV southbound on the highway when he ran into the back of the 18-wheeler, police said. A minivan then crashed into the back of the SUV, causing his vehicle to burst into flames, police said.

The southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for several hours as authorities investigated.
