Ex-boyfriend arrested in shooting of Fort Worth woman

A Fort Worth man was in custody Sunday, accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend in the back on the morning of Aug. 9 after his birthday party at his home.

Police identified the suspect as Alejandro Rodriguez, 22. He was in the Mansfield Jail on Sunday.

The 20-year-old woman survived the shooting.

Rodriguez faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana, according to Mansfield Jail records.

Officers with the Fugitive Unit arrested Rodriguez on Friday morning.

On Aug. 9, patrol officers were dispatched to a shooting call shortly before 7:30 a.m. at RaceTrac, 690 E. Berry St. They found the woman with a gunshot in the back. She told police she had been shot at her ex-boyfriend’s home in the 2700 block of Stuart Drive.

She told police that after she was shot she escaped from the home and drove to the RaceTrac for help.

She told the Star-Telegram in a recent interview that she and others were at her ex-boyfriend’s home on Stuart Drive for his birthday party the night of Aug. 8. She asked that she not be identified for fear of retaliation.

“I was feeling sick, so I laid down on a bed,” she tsaid. “When I got up the next morning, I found him going through my cellphone, and he started yelling at me when he saw the names of other guys.”

As they sat in a bedroom, she said, the suspect grabbed a rifle and told her not to move or he would kill her. The suspect fired shots around her anytime she talked or tried to move, she said. In all, she said he fired more than 15 times.

“I was on the bedroom floor when he fired this one time at me and I saw blood. He had shot me in the back,” she said. “He started crying and saying, ‘I’m so sorry.’”

She said she saw her chance to escape from the home, got to her car and drove away for help.

Rodriguez was in jail Sunday with bail set at $31,914.
