TxDOT updates completion date for Southeast Connector project
Construction of the $2.2 billion Southeast Connector project is on track to wrap up in early 2028, according to an update from the Texas Department of Transportation.
The project — which will widen and reroute roughly 16 miles of highway to expand Interstate 20, Southeast Loop 820 and U.S. 287 at the juncture of Fort Worth, Forest Hill, Everman and Arlington — is on track for “substantial completion” in February 2028. Work began in 2022 with an expected five-year turnaround.
Here’s what to know about some estimated timelines for the project, according to TxDOT:
Interstate 820 corridor updates
On the northbound East Loop 820 frontage road between Rosedale Street and Lancaster Avenue, traffic has been reconnected northbound from Rosedale to Lancaster and to northbound Interstate 20.
On southbound East Loop 820 frontage road between Lancaster Avenue to Meadowbrook Drive, elevation changes on the new roadway have led to the closure of some streets and road connections, but that frontage road and its accompanying streets are expected to reopen this fall.
On the southbound East Loop 820 frontage road between Brentwood Stair Road and Lancaster Avenue, the frontage road has been relocated to be adjacent to highway lanes with a concrete barrier separation so that crews can work safely without impacting traffic.
Pending weather or field-related delays “permanent pavement operations” are anticipated to begin this summer.
The southbound East Loop 820 frontage road between Lancaster and Rosedale has been closed while crews install new underground drainage. Pending weather or field-related delays, a southbound exit ramp to Rosedale is expected to open this summer.
Additionally, the frontage road from Lancaster to Rosedale is expected to open in the fall.
Bridge updates
TxDOT shared that the following Interstate 820 bridges could reopen later this year: Sun Valley Drive, Anglin Drive, Lancaster Avenue and Craig Street.
